If you believe there are cases where a dog can not be rehabilitated, then the sad end to the pit bull named Oreo is one of those unfortunate cases. On Friday, the dog named Oreo was euthanized because the New York ASPCA determined this pit bull was too vicious to ever be rehabilitated. The story of Oreo goes back 6 months to the day a teenage boy tossed Oreo off a Brooklyn roof. Oreo survived a 60 ft. fall onto concrete. After surviving broken legs and punctured lungs, it was felt by the ASPCA that Oreo could not survive psychologically.
The New York Times reported: "Officials at Pets Alive, a nonprofit animal sanctuary in Middletown, N.Y., said it received no response to phone calls, e-mail messages and tweets they sent requesting to take in the dog. “We’ve had tremendous success with these types of cases,” said Kerry Clair, executive co-director of the sanctuary. “After all the abuse this dog been through, the solution is not to kill her.”
It is too bad that another agency could not intervene in Oreo's behalf. If Oreo was kept in safe-keeping away from children, dogs, and other vulnerable humans, perhaps Oreo's ending would have been happy. We owe an animal that has suffered at the hands of a cruel human being...one more chance.
