Weekend Meditation: Ravi Shankar Chanting Asato Ma
As I think I wrote early on in this blog, I have been focused on spirituality for quite a number of years and I currently describe my spiritual path as Interfaith Christian on the path of Bahkti Yoga.Bahkti is the path of devotion and it is said that it is the quickest way to unification with the Godhead.I didn’t choose this path for that reason, it actually chose me.I mean, I was doing it without knowing what it was called. There are two components to Bahkti:contemplation/mediation on sacred images and chant.
I love chant, in particular the Vedic chants, which are chanted in the Sanskrit language. The Sanskrit seed sounds are said to be the building blocks of the universe. For example, OM is the vibration of the universe.
I thought it would be nice to end one week and start another with this very calming, meditative chanting of asato ma with Ravi Shankar. The video has very peaceful and beautiful garden pictures to meditate on while Ravi plays sitar and chants. Here are the words in both Sanskrit and English. Om Shanti. Peace to you.
Om asato ma sadgamaya tamaso ma jyothir gamaya mrityoma amritham gamaya
Om Shaantih Shaanti Shaanit.
Lead me from the unreal to the real.
Lead me from darkness to light.
(i.e. from ignorance to knowledge).
Lead me from death to immortality.
May there be peace, peace, peace and perfect peace.

Stray Yellar Dawg, have a lovely Kirtan with Krishan Das. We have a Kirtan group that meets every week. I have not been able to attend for a while, but it is always so nice to chant with others. I do my own Kirtan at home when I cannot do it with others.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families touched by these acts of terror in Mumbai. We still do not know the full measure of this tragedy, which has taken the lives of Indian citizens, Americans, and others who had traveled to Mumbai from around the world. Two New Yorkers, Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and Rivka Holtzberg of Brooklyn are among those who have died, leaving behind their young son. The young couple had traveled from Brooklyn to manage a small Chabad house, welcoming Jews from India and elsewhere to learn, pray, and serve the community.
There could be no sharper a reminder, nor a more poignant call to action, than the brutal and heinous violence visited upon the Nariman House and the Holtzberg family, living and working in Mumbai on a mission of peace, scholarship, and spiritual guidance.
As those responsible are brought to justice, as we aid and support the victims and their families, as we work to defeat radical extremism and the terror it spawns, let us find strength in knowing that in the face of those who seek to take lives, there are those who seek to give hope and comfort. In the face of those who wish only to destroy, there are individuals like Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and Rivka Holtzberg who travel great distances far from their homes to build a better world.
Quite beautiful! It makes me long for a day of Kirtan....
Good think I will be having one soon. Next weekend I'll be in Mystic with Krishna Das. I can hardly wait now!
Thanks.
