Gee, even when Maureen Dowd is "sweet" on Caroline, she still gets in a few cutting remarks against Caroline Kennedy's speech patterns. Most of us have caught ourselves doing something to that effect when nervous, or especially when caught off guard. Yet, that issue with Kennedy isn't what bothers voters. It has been the sense of inevitability that the media has helped her to project to the public.
I can agree with Dowd that Caroline speaks a lot better than Al D'Amato, but that isn't the way for Maureen Dowd to promote the candidacy of Caroline Kennedy.
Dowd says she watched Dick Cheney swear in members of several dynasties to the senate this week. She goes on to say that we still have enough of our British blood to be attracted to this sort of thing. Perhaps America is now finally tired of the family networks and the less than shining results it has brought. Though Dowd includes Hillary Clinton among the dynasties, let's remember this is a husband-wife team, not a stream of Clinton family members. For me, the Rockefellers and Kennedys come to mind when dynasty is mentioned, and of course they were there at the ceremonies.
There aren't too many times anymore when I can agree with Maureen Dowd. But she does say it well this when she closes her article with: It isn’t what your name is. It’s what you do with it.
