Some experts said the Seaford resident's announcement last week that he intends to challenge Clinton's successor in 2010, along with a reputation for tough campaigning, could dissuade contenders such as political neophyte Caroline Kennedy.
Gov. David A. Paterson also may have to select state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo or another high-profile candidate over members of Congress, mayors and county executives in hopes of defeating King and keeping the Senate seat in Democratic hands, the experts said.
"Peter King's presence in the race could potentially scare Paterson away from naming a relative unknown like the mayor of Buffalo or one of the congresswomen," said political scientist Richard Himelfarb of Hofstra University........Read The Rest
