ALBANY - Rep. Peter King, through nine congressional campaigns, has burnished his image as a Republican pugilist. But now he may well become a spoiler to Democrats hoping to replace Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.With the disgraceful spotlight on the Chicago Govenor, it now forces New York Gov. Bill Paterson to consider Hillary's replacement a little differently. Republican Peter King makes no secret about his intentions to run against Hillary's successor in 2010. Paterson needs someone who can win, and Kennedy is a neophyte. In short, Paterson does not need to look like his choice is for his own personal benefit as far as his own re-election is concerned.
Peter King is well-known in New York for his work on Homeland Security, which is of primary concern to voters. King speaks highly of Kennedy, but wants his opposition, whoever it is, to be aware he will fight very hard for the senate seat in 2010....TRedwine

Some experts said the Seaford resident's announcement last week that he intends to challenge Clinton's successor in 2010, along with a reputation for tough campaigning, could dissuade contenders such as political neophyte Caroline Kennedy.
Gov. David A. Paterson also may have to select state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo or another high-profile candidate over members of Congress, mayors and county executives in hopes of defeating King and keeping the Senate seat in Democratic hands, the experts said.
"Peter King's presence in the race could potentially scare Paterson away from naming a relative unknown like the mayor of Buffalo or one of the congresswomen," said political scientist Richard Himelfarb of Hofstra University........Read The Rest
