Don't you despise public apologies that only ask forgiveness for hurting the feelings of those offended, but do not retract the inaccuracies made in the original statement that caused the outrage? Usually public officials and careless politicians do this.
The apology of the "Holocaust-denying Bishop Richard Williamson is one of these outrageous "apologies". The apology itself is condescending in that Williamson apologizes for causing distress to the Pope and the Jewish people, but maintains the accuracy of his beliefs by simply not withdrawing his statement as to the number of Jews and other people murdered by the Nazi's in concentration camps and gas chambers. In fact, Williamson said on a radio broadcast 'there were no gas chambers.'
The scandal came about after Pope Benedict XVI withdrew the excommunication of ultra-conservative bishops that objected to Vatican reforms made by 'Vatican Two' in the 1960's. The withdrawl of the excommunications was an effort by the Pope to unite the Church. This disgusting information about Bishop Williamson was not known to the Pope prior to the news breaking about the scandal. The Pope even went to the extent this past Wednesday of pointing out the images of atrocities he personally witnessed at Auschwitz. The Pope rejects Holocaust-Denial, and so do all educated and enlightened minds.
